SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The B.B. Comer Tigers basketball team took a huge step on Monday afternoon, Jan. 8, towards trying to host their area tournament at the end of the year.
The Tigers hosted the Coosa Central Cougars, but not at a normal time. They started the area bash at 1:00 p.m. and allowed students that wanted to pay admission to watch the game before school’s dismissal. You could not have put any more people inside the Jungle.
However, the game did not start like they wanted.
Head Coach Richard Bell’s Cougars took the early lead and never looked back….until very late.
Chris Wilson established inside play for the Tigers in the first half, and Tae Swain gave a big lift from the bench. Due to turnovers and cold shooting, though, B.B. Comer found itself trailing by 12 at the half.
The Tigers cut into the lead in the third quarter behind fast breaks and drives to the basket, especially from senior, Memphis football signee, Kamore Harris.
Despite his and the rest of the team’s efforts, they still trailed by 12 at the end of the third stanza.
They chipped and nudged their way back but still found themselves down by two with just a few seconds left when senior Chris Wilson’s bucket at the buzzer sent it into overtime.
However, the Cougars struck back by scoring the first seven points in the extra frame. Comer Head Coach Marcus Herbert’s team did not give up.
Coosa Central would not score again and for the final 1:47, the Tigers would score the next six points to trail by one with four seconds on the clock. After a Central turnover, the home team cats found Wilson underneath the basket, and he laid it in at the buzzer to win it 75-74.
The Tigers are now 9-2 on the season and 3-0 in area play. They stand a good chance to be the number one seed in the small school county tournament next week.
They finish this busy week by traveling to Glencoe on Tuesday night, home area battles with Thorsby on Thursday and Isabella on Friday, and finally traveling to Lincoln on Saturday.
