Three city baseball teams finish season in state tournament

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Three Sylacauga Cal Ripken league teams finished in the top four in their respective age groups following state all-star tournaments last weekend.

The city’s 12U, 8U and 7U teams all made it into the final four, Sylacauga’s Donald Comer Jr.complex hosted the state 12U tournament.

“We are really proud of them. That’s a feat,” Jim Armstrong praised. Armstrong is the director of Sylacauga Parks and Recreation. “Those were some good ball games.”

Armstrong also said the city received high praise for the way it hosted the 12U tournament.

“The Cal Ripken [representative] was there and he said ‘This is probably the best state tournament I’ve ever been to,’ Armstrong stated. “Teams from all over the state are here and they’re saying ‘This is a good tournament.’ Everybody was nice; they complimented our fields. So that makes you feel good.”

When asked about the amount of people that attended the tournament, Armstrong gave some surprising numbers. “I wouldn’t be afraid to say there were over 1,000 people at the ball game. All the hotels in town were booked up, plus some in surrounding cities. They ate at our restaurants, shopped at our shops, and had a great impact on our city,” he said.

Although the spring season is over, baseball is not finished in 2019. Sylacauga Parks and Rec. will offer fall baseball later this year. “We just want to give kids the opportunity to get better. We are offering something else for kids to do.”
