TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega County Commission opened their work session with Commissioners hearing reports from several entities and citizens.
Jeff Turner and Mitzi Martin of Feral Dogs of Avondale Mills reported on their Spay/Neuter Voucher program, which provided 858 vouchers costing $50,988, and collecting $25,740 from purchasers.
Cindy Atkinson gave a report on AltaPointe services. District 1 citizen Walter Vereen reported to the Commission that the mile and a half long private road he lives on has over 30 homes basically abandoned by the developer who did not provide proper drainage, nor maintain the road, which now washes away during periods of heavy rain.
Vereen asked if Commissioners had any suggestions, and several said they would study some ideas but admitted that, as a private road, there’s not much they can legally do to affect repairs themselves.
District 3 resident Boncynthia Graham reported a proposed nightclub in her residential district in an unincorporated area of the Howell Cove area. Commission Chairman Kelvin Cunningham said that he had heard talk of that, but that so far no construction plans are in place.
“That’s something that has to happen for them to even attempt to get an ABC License,” said Cunningham.
In regular meeting action, the Commissioners approved a $22.8 million General Fund budget, projecting $22,868,300 in revenue with $2,803,500 in expenses, and a surplus of $64,800. This budget represents an increase of $902,300 over the FY24 budget.
Other items in the “Operating, Special Purpose, and Debt Service Funds” total $43,111,400 in expected revenue, $43,310,300 in expenses, with a variance of $198,900. Pledged Funds are reported at $14,571,000 for both revenues and expenses. Custodial Funds for law enforcement programs reflected $522,800 in revenues, $520,800 in expenses, with a surplus of $2,000.
The vote to approve the award of materials bids for the Highway Department’s FY25 budget was unanimous approval, as was approval for the Domestic Violence Crime Unit ADECA Sub-grant Awards, authorizing the Chairman to sign resolutions.
A pair of ABC License Applications were approved for District 1 businesses – Kiwi Foodmart and Festival Outfitter, LLC.
The Commission approved a proclamation in honor of National 4-H Week, Oct. 6-12, 2024.
