MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Heath Harmon, a Talladega County native, has been named the sixth Executive Director of the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA).
The announcement was made Thursday, June 6, at a press conference held at the AHSAA office in Montgomery where Harmon was introduced.
Currently the principal of Oxford High School, Harmon will officially begin his new role in early July.
The decision was approved by the AHSAA Central Board of Control during a special meeting. Harmon, 49, succeeds Alvin Briggs, who is retiring after serving as Executive Director since 2021.
“He has proven to be an effective leader, and we are confident of his ability, excited about his enthusiasm, and look forward to working with him to lead our association into the future,” said Central Board President Mike Welsh.
Harmon, a Munford High School graduate, brings 27 years of experience as an educator and administrator to his new role.
“I have had the opportunity to work with the AHSAA as a coach and administrator. It is one of the best organizations in the country,” Harmon stated. “I look forward to working with the Central Board of Control, the AHSAA staff, our member school principals, athletic directors, coaches, and officials from across the state. Together we will make sure the student-athletes in Alabama have a great experience participating in education-based athletics.”
Harmon earned a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education, English, and History from Jacksonville State University. He also holds an master’s degree in Secondary Education, English, and Educational Leadership, as well as an Educational Specialist degree, both from the University of Alabama.
