CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – The main focus of the Talladega County Commissioners pre-meeting work session for Monday, Aug. 12 concerned the proposed EMA Emergency Response Plan, as presented by EMA Director Andy McWilliams.
Commissioner Malley Limbaugh noted that in spite of the length and thoroughness of the plan, he wanted to make an addition brought up by constituents.
“I think it really needs to address plans for a major gas leak in one of our communities,” said Limbaugh.

Commissioner Philip Morris suggested, “Most people don’t know what we know about emergency plans, and we need to find ways to educate them. We need a strong method to notify and inform them in an emergency like a gas leak to stay away.”
The rest of the discussion included the idea that the involved gas companies or departments, along with well-trained fire-fighters, are equipped to handle plans for dealing with such gas leaks. Nevertheless, the matter was ultimately tabled to take more time to look at the plan before voting.
In regular business action, the commissioners unanimously approved a contract with the City of Sylacauga for animal shelter services, to include acceptance of domestic animals (dogs and cats) delivered to the Sylacauga Animal Shelter from within the unincorporated three-mile area adjacent to Sylacauga, in consideration for the annual sum of $20,000.
The agreement will run concurrently with the fiscal year, starting in October and going through until the following September.
The Commission also approved the terms of a contract with Sylacauga Parks and Recreation to provide seniors living in the Sycamore area, the services provided by the Maxye Veazey Senior Center.
That agreement will also run concurrently with the fiscal year, October through the following September, for a sum of $20,000 paid to the City of Sylacauga.
The Commission meeting was adjourned following routine approval of a pair of training requests for the Probate Office.
