TALLADEGA COUNTY, Ala. – For the last two weeks, the Talladega County Board of Education (TCBOE), in coordination with the Childersburg Fire and Rescue Department, has been showing high school students what it takes to be a firefighter.
Over the last ten days, the prospects have learned how to put on and take off PPE (personal protective equipment), how to work in extreme heat conditions, how to tie knots, ladder safety, forcing entry, search and rescue techniques, evacuation drills, confined space navigation, techniques to evacuate a downed firemen, and more.
The academy will continue for two more weeks with the trainees needing to score well on four different exams to complete the full course.
Along with the TCBOE and Childersburg Fire and Rescue, the partnership includes the Alabama Fire College and the Sylacauga Alliance for Family Enhancement (SAFE).
