STAFFORD, Va. – The Sylacauga under-15 Babe Ruth All-Stars took their talents to Virginia, and after four pool play games, the team will now prepare for the elimination bracket portion of the Babe Ruth World Series.
After a practice game last Friday, the Sylacauga squad fell in its opening contest of the World Series to the Greenville, North Carolina unit, 11-1, on Saturday, Aug. 13.
This was a tough start to the tourney for Sylacauga, but it’s nothing to be too disheartened by. The Greenville boys are unbeaten after pool play with a staggering +44 run differential. Their other results in pool play include:
– 14-0 win over Lakeside, Virginia
– 11-1 win over Rapid City, South Dakota
– 12-2 win over Sandy, Oregon
Greenville ran away with their pool, the National Division, and should be considered from here the heavy favorites to win the tournament.
Sylacauga then suffered a 10-4 defeat to Sandy, Oregon on Sunday. That sent the squad into an 0-2 hole in the group stage, but the fight in the young Aggies could not be denied.
On Monday, Sylacauga bested Lakeside, Virginia after a high-scoring affair, 11-7. Now sitting at 1-2, the boys were poised with an opportunity to make it to the upper Championship bracket with another win.
Unfortunately, Sylacauga lost 12-1 in its final pool play game to Bridgewater, New Jersey yesterday. With a few pool play games remaining today, Sylacauga is expected to finish fifth or sixth in the National Division.
With either result, the boys will play their first round matchup with a team from the American Division in the lower Iron Man bracket.
If in sixth place, Sylacauga will face the American fifth-place team Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m. EST. If the Aggies finish one spot higher in fifth, they’ll play the sixth-ranked team from the American Division around 1:00 p.m. EST.
