Childersburg will host Sylacauga in basketball, and for all intents and purposes, it will be intense. The one time these two teams played last season was in the Talladega County Super Championship with Childersburg getting the better of it.Coach Johnny Johnson said, “Neither one of us got to play the other on our home courts since the county championship was in Winterboro, so we are excited to be playing tonight and looking forward to traveling to Sylacauga later in the season.”Coach Johnson’s team is full of fresh faces. They are a very young team after the starting five from last year are all gone now due to graduating. They may be young and somewhat inexperienced, but they are very athletic and fast. Most are smaller in size but not in heart. They play hard, and tonight will be one of the nights that they will play the hardest. On the flip side of the coin, new Sylacauga Head Coach Marty Smith might be in this rivalry for the first time, but he is no stranger to big stages and his team won’t be either.Coach Smith has been successful in every sport at every stop he has made, including a couple of state championships at John Carroll. He got a late start here at Sylacauga but is learning his team, and I think if you are going to get the better of them, you might want to do it earlier in the season rather than later.Childersburg has opened the season at 2-0 after defeating Coosa Central, 71-64, on Tuesday night and kept their record perfect Thursday as they routed Shelby County, 65-34. The Aggies, on the other hand, have lost their first two by close margins. They fell Tuesday on the road by three to a larger Gadsden City team, and last night at Indian Springs by a score of 71-67.It really doesn’t matter what the records of these two teams are when they get together.Maximum effort on the court, coaching at it’s very best, and a wild and large crowd will certainly ensure that the Sports Arena in Childersburg will be rocking Friday night!
