SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Ben Wesson, a senior at Sylacauga High School, turned his passion for fishing into collegiate opportunity after signing a scholarship with Central Alabama Community College on Thursday afternoon, May 2.
Wesson sealed his intent amidst cheers and support from family and friends in the Sylacauga High School media center at 2:00 p.m.
Reflecting on the momentous occasion, Wesson expressed his excitement, stating, “This has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid. I can’t wait to see what’s in store.”
The journey towards this milestone began in Wesson’s freshman year when he discovered his talent for angling. Over the years, he honed his skills, culminating in this opportunity to sign with CACC.
What draws Wesson to fishing is the camaraderie. He highlighted all of the bonds he’s created through the sport.
Recruited solely by Central Alabama Community College, Wesson looks forward to working with Coach Michael McClain.
“He’s a really nice guy,” noted Wesson. “He’s really informative. He cares. He wants his team to succeed. He’s answered every single question I’ve asked, and I can’t wait to start the season with him.”
Beyond fishing, Wesson plans to pursue a technical degree in machining and electrical, with aspirations to attend lineman school post-graduation.
Reflecting on his time at Sylacauga High School, Wesson encouraged underclassmen to explore their passions, echoing the sentiments instilled in him by his parents John and Katie and mentor, boat captain Steve “OT” Thompson.
Despite the pressure to emulate past Sylacauga fishing success stories, notably Bassmaster Elite Champion Will Davis and recent Troy signee Mason Laurin, Wesson remains focused on his love for the sport and its potential to pave the way for his educational endeavors.
