Sylacauga Police Department clarifies animal control responsibilities

SHARE NOW

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga Police Department (SPD) has issued a reminder to residents about recent changes in handling loose dogs within the community.

According to a post made on the SPD’s Facebook page, as of November 2023, all animal control duties have been transferred to the Sylacauga Animal Shelter.

The police department no longer handles non-vicious stray dogs, and residents are urged to contact the Animal Shelter directly at (256) 401-2691 or (256) 401-2590 for such issues.

However, for complaints involving vicious dogs, the department advises calling their dispatch at (256) 761-1556 as well as the Animal Shelter.

In cases of dog bites, the SPD will still file a report and work with the animal control officer.

The department thanks the community for their cooperation in maintaining public safety.
