SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Sylacauga Parks and Recreation will host a groundbreaking ceremony for its new recreation center at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12.
Community members are invited to attend the long-awaited event. The ceremony will begin promptly at the project site, located at the intersection of Hwy 21, N Norton Ave., and Central Ave., behind the Chevron station.
The project, which was initiated in 2022, is the culmination of four years of research and planning. Once completed, the recreation center will feature two basketball courts that can also accommodate four volleyball courts, a fully equipped fitness center with cardio equipment, strength machines and free weights, and an indoor walking track that will provide a safe, climate-controlled space for year-round exercise.
The facility will also include an eight-lane swimming pool for lap and competitive swimming, as well as a separate 3.5-foot-deep instructional pool designed for swim lessons, water aerobics, and therapy programs.
Additional amenities will include locker rooms with showers, a concession area to serve tournaments and special events, and two multipurpose meeting rooms for community meetings, classes, and private events.
Construction is expected to begin shortly after the groundbreaking ceremony. The project is anticipated to take approximately two years to complete.
