SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The City of Sylacauga is encouraging residents to review local ordinances and Alabama state laws related to animal control and public nuisances ahead of a future special-called work session focused on community education and feedback.

This comes after a resolution has been tabled by the Sylacauga City Council twice concerning the feral dog situation that remains an issue along the Hwy 280 corridor.

City officials said the meeting date and time have not yet been determined, but a separate public notification will be issued once details are finalized. Residents are also encouraged to share the information with others in the community.

Copies of the ordinances are available through the City Clerk’s Facebook page, where links to searchable city ordinances and state laws have been posted. Hard copies are also available at the city clerk’s office.

Among the ordinances highlighted is Article II of the city’s animal control code, which outlines regulations concerning dogs within city limits. The ordinance requires all dogs to be vaccinated for rabies in accordance with Alabama law and to wear identification tags when outside enclosed private property. Dogs must remain under restraint at all times, either through fencing, leashing, or direct control by a responsible person.

The ordinance also details procedures for impoundment, rabies exposure, quarantine requirements, and the handling of vicious dogs. Violations may result in fines ranging from $150 for a first offense to $500 and possible jail time for repeated violations.

City officials also circulated nuisance ordinances addressing unsafe properties, debris, health hazards, and other conditions deemed harmful to public safety or quality of life.
