Sylacauga Next Level Football Camp set to teach more than just football

SHARE NOW

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – A former Samford football player and Sylacauga native, Kelsey Pope, will host a football camp for area children and teens.

The camp will be conducted by Pope and many of his former teammates at Samford University. Next Level Sports Camps is a 501 C3 non-profit organization operated out of Birmingham. Pope told SylacaugaNews.com the camps are completely funded by donations from ex-players from Samford University and Samford Alumni.

Pope said the camps’ origin began at Samford, but today the players bring the camp back to their hometowns and teach young people about the game of football.

Lessons taught at the camp will far surpass the game of football. Guest speakers will be present at the camp. One of the speakers will preach on the importance of finances and financial literacy. Pope said he is currently working to lock in more guest speakers.

Pope said the objective of the camp is to bring role models and leaders to the youth in the Sylacauga community. “We are using football as a bridge to bring positive influences to the community, and we are hoping to do this for a number of years in the future,” Pope explained. “We just want to make a positive impact.”

The camp is set to take place on July 1 at Legion field in Sylacauga. Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. at Tom Calvin Field House and the camp will officially begin at 9 a.m. and last until 2:00 p.m. All campers will receive a free t-shirt, and lunch will be provided. AGes 8 to 17 are invited to attend.
