SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act was signed into law by President Trump on March 27, and Sylacauga Municipal Airport has been granted portion.
The Act includes $10 billion in funds to be awarded as economic relief to eligible U.S. airports affected by the prevention of, preparation for and response to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) website. Sylacauga’s airport will receive $30,000.
“Those that are under the FAA system, and are recognized as vital, and have a meaningful purpose to the state and nation are eligible for this CARES Act,” said Chair of the Sylacauga Airport Board Authority Tommy Dobson.
The Sylacauga Municipal Airport actually had completed construction on the runway a month prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, so people did not get a chance to realize, according to Dobson.
“At the airport we make money off of fuel sales and hangar rentals, so the idea is that this CARES Act really helps with that, and it does,” said Dobson.
