SYLACAUGA, Ala. – After posting 10 wins through their first 12 games and securing a county championship in the process, the Sylacauga Lady Aggies soccer team has been ranked first in the newest Alabama Class 5A rankings.
The official rankings, released Monday by scorbord.com, saw the Lady Aggies overtake East Limestone.
“It’s a great accolade for this talented team,” said Head Coach Nick Grogan. “They put in so much hard work in the off-season. What’s so impressive about this team is their commitment to be their best each practice and each match.
According to Grogan, it’s the first time the girls’ soccer program has ever been ranked number one in the state
Third in the rankings were Marbury, one of Sylacauga’s region opponents that managed to squeak by Sylacauga last week at home in a 1-0 double overtime contest.
The Lady Aggies rebounded in dominant fashion with a resounding 10-0 victory over Demopolis this past weekend.
Sylacauga’s strength of schedule has definitely played a part in its number one ranking. Besides the loss at Marbury, Sylacauga’s only other defeat came against 6A Benjamin Russell.
In the win column, the Lady Aggies have notched victories vs. Brewer, Munford, Arab, Susan Moore, Elmore County, Beauregard, the aforementioned Demopolis, and, arguably most impressive, three wins over the sixth-ranked Lincoln Golden Bears.
However, for Grogan, being ranked number one midseason is not the goal this team has in mind.
“I feel like until you win the blue map, you’re not number one,” Grogan noted.
This week, the Lady Aggies soccer squad hits the road with away games Tuesday night at Shelby County and Thursday night at Holtville.
