SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Sylacauga City Schools released its annual wellness assessment showing strong school-wide implementation for its wellness plans.
Kelly Wassermann, the Director of CNP/Wellness/Communications at Sylacauga City Schools, said each school has had a wellness plan since 2006 and goals have been more accepted each year.
Each plan consists of strategies such as limiting unhealthy choices; limiting or eliminating sugar-sweetened beverages; providing non-food rewards; and providing opportunities for children to get physical activity every day.
Policies were created to accompany each strategy. Established wellness committees that ensure compliance and evaluate progress with the yearly goals assessed each school to have strong policies in each area.
“Wellness committees are appointed at each school and consist of administrators, teachers, Child Nutrition personnel, coaches, nurses, parents, and students,” Wassermann said. “These groups have worked together to promote a strong culture of overall wellness for the benefit of our students.”
