SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Sylacauga City Schools will open a new statewide virtual learning option this year, offering families across Alabama a tuition-free, full-time online public school.
Beginning in the 2025-26 school year, the Alabama Virtual Classical Academy will serve students in kindergarten through eighth grade, with additional grades added annually. The program is a partnership between Sylacauga City Schools and the Accel Schools Network.
“Our school board recognized the need for families to have an additional educational option that would encompass high-quality virtual instruction,” said Sylacauga City Schools Superintendent Dr. Michele Eller. “This virtual school option is not only available for Sylacauga City Schools students but also for students statewide.”
The Alabama Virtual Classical Academy will be Alabama’s first virtual classical academy, emphasizing a liberal arts curriculum alongside flexible, individualized learning. Students do not need to live in the Sylacauga district to enroll.
The school will be led by Dr. April R. Siddique, Principal and former head of Virtual Prep Academy of Washington, and Dr. William J. Bennett, Provost and former U.S. Secretary of Education.
Dr. Eller said the program aims to provide a “future-ready education” for students who may need more flexibility, additional support, or a different approach to learning.
