SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Sylacauga City Schools (SCS) has introduced an innovative Teacher Apprentice Program, providing aspiring educators with paid, hands-on teaching experience while earning college credit.
The two-year initiative, launched by the Alabama Office of Apprenticeship for the 2024-2025 school year, will prepare future teachers for real-world classroom challenges.
In partnership with Jacksonville State University, participants spend the first year learning from mentor teachers, mastering classroom management and instructional techniques.
By the second year, apprentices take charge of their own classrooms, supported by ongoing mentorship.
“The Teacher Apprentice program is an excellent opportunity for us to grow our own teachers in our district,” said SCS Superintendent Dr. Michele Eller. “I am grateful for Gov. Ivey’s vision to create a unique pipeline of educators in our state.”
The program, already active at Pinecrest Elementary and Nichols-Lawson Middle, will expand across the system to Indian Valley Elementary and Sylacauga High. Graduates will enter the workforce with two years of teaching experience, positioning them as highly competitive candidates in today’s job market.
