SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga City Schools (SCS) Foundation celebrated a significant achievement, surpassing $2 million in total investments, during a special event at the SCS Winter Institute.
The milestone highlights decades of commitment to enriching education through financial support.
Dr. Joe Morton, founder of the Foundation in 1988 and current Treasurer and Finance and Investments Committee Chair, shared the organization’s history during the event. Attendees included the Foundation’s Board of Directors, Sylacauga City Schools leadership, Mayor Jim Heigl, and City Council members.
Dr. Morton credited the Alabama Power Foundation as an early supporter, contributing $25,000 to establish a Chair in its name. This partnership led to the creation of a statewide model, resulting in 88 similar school foundations across Alabama.
Since its inception, the SCS Foundation has provided over $1.5 million in grants over 36 years, funding classroom initiatives and programs. These grants are made possible through interest earned from the Foundation’s investments.
From starting with no initial funding in 1988 to reaching $1 million in 2000 and now $2 million in 2024, the Foundation’s growth reflects its enduring mission.
The celebration concluded with refreshments provided by the Coosa Valley Medical Center’s Hickory Street Cafe.
