SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Elsie Reams Abernathy and the rest of the Reams family were presented Wednesday afternoon, March 6, with the 67th Chair by the Sylacauga City Schools (SCS) Foundation.
This honor commemorates Mrs. Abernathy’s enduring legacy of generosity along with her commitment to education. In her passing, Elsie willed a generous donation to the school system. Her family would donate more after her death to reach the $25,000 mark and attain Chair status.
A graduate of Sylacauga High School in 1961, Aunt Elsie, as she was known by, dedicated 35 years to public service with the federal government. Her dedication to the community extended beyond her professional life, as evidenced by her involvement with the Irondale Public Library Board and the Women’s Auxiliary of the Salvation Army of Birmingham.
Elsie’s profound impact continues through her posthumous contribution to the SCS Foundation, furthering educational opportunities for youth in Sylacauga. Her story underscores the importance of service and community involvement.
Established in 1988 by Dr. Joseph B. Morton, the SCS Foundation remains committed to supporting educational excellence and meeting the needs of students in the Sylacauga school system.
