Sylacauga City Schools expand AI, blended learning to strengthen classroom instruction

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga City School system is expanding its use of instructional technology by embracing artificial intelligence, blended learning and strategic partnerships aimed at strengthening teaching and learning across the district.

Over the past four years, the Sylacauga City Schools have rolled out a series of initiatives designed to equip educators with best practices, improve student outcomes, and ensure technology is used responsibly. District leaders say a commitment by the school board to digital literacy for both staff and students has been the driving force behind the effort.

A foundational component has been districtwide professional development in blended learning. Teachers across grade levels have taken part in hands-on training focused on designing student-centered learning environments, personalizing instruction through digital platforms, integrating AI-supported tools for planning and feedback, and embedding digital citizenship into daily instruction.

Officials say the training aligns with the Alabama State Courses of Study while building teacher confidence and supporting the district’s broader vision for innovation and continuous improvement.

To guide responsible AI use, Sylacauga City Schools formed a District AI Integration Team that includes instructional technology staff, curriculum leaders, administrators, and classroom teachers. The team is led by Superintendent Dr. Michele Eller and Elementary Program Specialist Dr. Jaclyn Rivers.

The group is tasked with developing districtwide AI procedures, creating guidance for ethical and secure use, providing ongoing training, and identifying high-impact applications that support instruction and reduce educator workload.

The district has also partnered with Digital Promise, the International Society for Technology in Education, GenerationAI, and YourWay. Through those collaborations, educators receive customized professional learning, coaching support, and access to resources such as the YourWay AI platform, which allows teachers to create differentiated materials and support personalized learning.

District leaders say the combined efforts are transforming classrooms by helping teachers streamline tasks and deliver more interactive instruction while preparing students for an increasingly digital world.
