Sylacauga City Council renames Lake Howard Rd. in honor of longtime SUB Water and Sewer Superintendent

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Lake Howard Rd. has been renamed.

At Tuesday night’s city council meeting, the council honored longtime Sylacauga Utilities Board Superintendent Robert Morris by renaming Lake Howard Rd. to Robert Morris Ln. Morris worked at the water treatment plant for 38 years.

District 1 Councilman Ashton Fowler presented Morris’ son, Rick, with a plaque in recognition of his father’s years of hard work and service.

The council also took the following actions at last night’s meeting:

  • Approved resolution 33-2021 to set date for public hearing to consider annexation and zoning of properties located at 169 Oldfield Circle, 124 Autumn Acres Lane, and 23 Tuscaloosa Avenue, as recommended by the Planning Commission.  First available date for public hearing is July 8, 2021.
  • Accepted recommendation from Lake Howard Recreational Authority to rename Lake Howard Road to Robert Morris Lane in memory of former SUB Water and Sewer Supt. Robert Morris, and to rename Boat Dock Lane to Lake Howard Road.
  • Approved request from Fire Chief Nate Osgood to replace FD Station #1 radio/PA system at a cost of $7,368.10 from Sci-2-Way.
  • Approved request from Shelly Bullard, Fermenters Market, to use City-owned parking lot between East 2nd St./East 3rd St. to host the Back Street Rumble on June 26, 2021. (City approval required for ABC application).
  • Approved request from Shelly Bullard, Fermenters Market, to use City-owned parking lot between East 2nd Street/East 3rd Street to host the Sylacauga Young Professional’s Shrimp Boil on July 17, 2021. (City approval required for ABC application.)
  • Approved travel/training for PD Sgt. Adam Peoples to attend the Instructor Development Course in Montgomery June 14-18, 2021.  Registration fee of $50. Additional expenses for meals will be incurred.  Total estimated expenses for Peoples of $125.
  • Approved travel/training for PD Lt. Renea Cummings and PD Lt. Willis Whatley to attend CLEEP training in Anniston on June 10 (Communicating to the Generations – Leading Generations); and June 11 (Today’s Law Enforcement is Changing – The New Normal).  Registration fee of $99 per course.  No additional expenses other than use of a city-provided vehicle.  Cummings and Whatley will carpool. Total estimated expenses for Cummings and Whatley of $198 each.
  • Approved travel/training for PD Investigator Chris Vinson to attend Training on Domestic Violence, Child Abuse, and Sexual Assault at the Ashland Police Department on May 11, 2021.  No registration fee; expenses for a meal will be incurred. Vinson will use a city-provided vehicle. Total estimated expenses for Vinson of $15.
  • Approved travel/training for PD Investigator Roman Hubbard and Investigator Kelly White to attend Training on Domestic Violence, Child Abuse, and Sexual Assault at the Ashland Police Department on May 12, 2021.  No registration fee; expenses for a meal will be incurred.  Hubbard and White will carpool in a city-provided vehicle. Total estimated expenses for Hubbard and White of $15.00/each.
  • Approved travel/training expenses for PD Sgt. Ryan Gaither and Office Lamar Taylor to attend K-9 Handler Training in Anniston; IK9 has not scheduled 40-hr training dates at this time.  No registration fee; expenses for lunches will be incurred. Officers will carpool in a city-provided vehicle.  Total estimated expenses for Gaither and Taylor of $150 each.
  • Approved travel/training expenses for Interim Accounting Manager Yourlanda Burns to attend the GFOAA Summer Conference in Orange Beach August 10-13, 2021.  Registration fee of $200.00.  Additional expenses for mileage, lodging, and meals will be incurred.  Total estimated expenses for Burns of $1,335.20.
  • Approved action to seek bids for COVID-19 cleaning services at city hall.
  • Approved April payroll in the amount of $591,415.74.
  • Approved balance of accounts payable for April in the amount of $295,278.23
