Sylacauga City Council recognizes Career and Technical Education Month, approves Fiscal Year 26 appropriations and purchases

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga City Council met Tuesday night, Feb. 3, following a work session that began at 5:00 p.m.

During the meeting, Mayor Dr. Matt Hubbard proclaimed February as Career and Technical Education Month. A presentation followed with Sylacauga City Schools Superintendent Dr. Michele Eller and teachers from the school system’s Career and Technical Education department.

The council also recognized three volunteers from the Sylacauga Animal Shelter with awards for their service and work supporting the shelter.

In old business, the council approved multiple Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations and contracts, including:

$758,597.80 for the City of Sylacauga’s B.B. Comer Memorial Library
$1,041,848.20 for Sylacauga Parks and Recreation
A contract not to exceed $61,250 with Sylacauga’s Commercial Development Authority
$5,000 for the Magic of Marble Festival
A contract not to exceed $3,500 with Sylacauga’s Historical Commission
A contract not to exceed $14,400 with Sylacauga’s Beautification Council
A contract for $6,000 with Sylacauga’s Feral Dogs of Avondale Mills
A contract for $10,000 with Palmer Place, Talladega County’s Child Advocacy Center

The council also entered into a five-year lease agreement with Aqua Systems of Alabama, funded within the Fiscal Year 2026 budget.

In addition, the council entered into an agreement with Reginald McKenzie for the property located at 260 St. John St. in Sylacauga.

In new business, the council approved electrical work for the Isabel Anderson Comer Museum, funded by bond proceeds, in the amount of $37,000.

The council also approved the Fire Department’s capital expenditure for equipment purchases related to Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus in the amount of $255,575, budgeted in the Fiscal Year 2026 capital plan.

The council approved Accounts Payable invoices for Fiscal Year 2025 totaling $114,268.92 and Accounts Payable invoices for Fiscal Year 2026 totaling $286,441.60.

January 2026 payrolls were approved in the amount of $789,915.34.

As an added item included after the work session, the council approved the Police Department’s capital purchase of five vehicles, including outfitting, in the amount of $361,292.52.

The next Sylacauga City Council meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 19, at 6:00 p.m.
