Sylacauga City Schools’ 125th anniversary celebrated at City Council meeting

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga City Council met Tuesday night, Sept. 20, at 6:00 p.m. for a scheduled council meeting.

Mayor Jim Heigl announced the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Sylacauga City School (SCS) system with a proclamation that Superintendent Dr. Michele Eller accepted.

Students representing the four schools within the system were in attendance and posed for a picture with the city council member as well as Mayor Heigl.

The following council agenda items were addressed:

The Sylacauga City Council approved travel and training expenses for Sandy Sorensen, Jayne McGee, and Kassey Epperson to attend the Local Government Health Insurance Board Benefit Admin Conference in Wetumpka, Oct. 19, 2022. No registration fee. Employees will carpool. Expenses for mileage and lunch will be incurred. Total estimated expenses for Sorensen are $74.75; for McGee, $25; for Epperson, $25.

The city council approved travel and training expenses for Wade Fuller to attend the ADEM Smoke School in Montgomery, Oct. 4-5, 2022. Registration fee of $290; additional expenses will be incurred. Estimated total expenses for Fuller are $368.75.

The council approved travel and training expenses for Stanley Peters to attend the Certified Euthanasia Technician Training Course in Cullman, Oct. 1-2, 2022. Registration fee of $300; additional expenses for mileage and lunches will be incurred. Estimated cost for Peters is $447.50.

They also approved the request from the Sylacauga Airport Authority to submit a pre-application for fiscal year 2023 (FY23) funding of Parallel Taxiway Rehabilitation. Total project cost of $1,148,800, federal share of $1,033,920, and state share of $57,440. A local match of $57,440 will be made and paid for by the Sylacauga Airport Authority.

The council accepted the balance of accounts payable invoices received for August in the amount of $288,133.23 and the August payroll in the amount of $497,326.48.

After the council meeting completed, the council entered a separate meeting regarding budget requests for the FY23.

A work session was held prior to the meeting at 5:00 p.m.

The next Sylacauga City Council meeting will be held Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 6:00 p.m.
