SYLACAUGA, Ala. – At Tuesday night’s Sylacauga City Council meeting, Ashton Fowler was voted as the new president for the next twelve-month period in a 3-2 split decision.
Lee Perryman will now serve as the President Pro-Tem, effective immediately.
Also, Mayor Jim Heigl presented a service award to Sylacauga Parks and Recreation board member Chris Taylor for his 30 years of dedication to the department. During his tenure, Taylor has worked with five different Parks and Rec directors as well as oversaw the building of the Maxye Veazey Senior Center.

The Sylacauga City Council declined consideration of a donation of property near the airport.
They authorized repairs to the crane at the city shop by Southeast Crane & Hoist, LLC at an estimated cost of $7,467.50 from fire damage on Sept. 1, 2022 (insurance claim).
The city council accepted the recommendation from Mayor Jim Heigl to extend cleaning services with Aaron’s Cleaning Service for an additional 90 days.
They also authorized roof repairs at the city shop by M J Brooks & Son Construction, Inc. at a cost of $3,100.
The council appointed Derek Smith to the Zoning Board of Adjustment and Appeals for a three-year term that expires Jan. 2022.
The Sylacauga City Council approved travel and training expenses for Fire Lt. Kyle Mosely to attend the AFC Investigator I course at the Opelika Training Center, Nov. 14-18, 2022. No registration fee. Expenses for meals and use of a city-provided vehicle will be incurred. Total estimated expenses for Moseley are $75.
The city council approved travel and training expenses for Fire Lt. Kyle Moseley and Fire Chief Nate Osgood to attend the AFC Rapid Intervention Crew Member course at the Alexander City FD, Nov. 28 – Dec. 2, 2022. No registration fee. Expenses for meals and use of a city-provided vehicle will be incurred. Total estimated expenses for Moseley and Osgood are $75 each.
The council approved travel and training expenses for Firefighter Shelby Byrd to attend the AFC Apparatus Operator: Aerial course at the Homewood FD, Nov. 28 – Dec. 2, 2022. No registration fee. Expenses for meals and use of a city-provided vehicle will be incurred. Total estimated expenses for Byrd are $75.
They approved travel and training expenses for Assistant Court Clerk Krissy King to attend the 2022 AOC Municipal CLE Class for Municipal Judges, Court Clerks & Magistrates in Montgomery, Nov. 4, 2022. Registration fee of $50. Additional expenses for meals and mileage will be incurred. Total estimated expenses for King are $149.
Additionally, they approved travel and training expenses for Magistrate Melanie Allen to attend the 2022 AOC Municipal CLE Class for Municipal Judges, Court Clerks & Magistrates in Montgomery, Dec. 2, 2022. Registration fee of $50. Additional expenses for meals and mileage will be incurred. Total estimated expenses for Allen are $149.
The council accepted the donation of a 2017 Ford Starcraft Starlite 15-Passenger Modified Van with one wheelchair station, serial number 1FDEE3FS1HDC74132, from East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Committee at no cost.
The city council accepted additional accounts payable invoice received for FY22 in the amount of $33,136.17 and additional invoices received for October in the amount of $263,062.84.
The council held a meeting regarding FY23 budget requests at 4:00 p.m. in Mayor Heigl’s conference room and then followed with the regular work session at 5:00 p.m.
The next meeting of the Sylacauga City Council will take place Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 6:00 p.m.
