[WATCH] Sylacauga City Council votes to change Fire Chief’s travel arrangement

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga City Council met Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m.

The council decided to remove Fire Chief Nate Osgood’s $250 monthly travel expense, and instead allow him to use a city-provided vehicle for transportation purposes. Osgood remarked that the city’s vehicle has been utilized multiple times and was essential to him during Hurricane Zeta back in October 2020.

Other agenda items that were addressed include:

The first order of business was the reading into the minutes of Mayor Jim Heigl’s re-appointment of Jessie Harrison to the Sylacauga Housing Authority board for the five-year term ending Feb. 3, 2027.

The council declared used cell phones and air cards as surplus property and authorized either disposal by sale to PaceButler Corporation which provided the highest quote to purchase phones of $3,782 or by scrapping as allowed by law.

The council approved training expenses for Interim City Clerk/Treasurer Kim Morris to attend the Al Association of Municipal Clerks and Administrators Spring Training virtual course April 27-29, 2022. Early-bird registration fee of $265. No additional expenses will be incurred.

They approved travel/training expenses for Firefighter Caleb Williams to attend the Alabama Fire College Rescue Technician: Rope I course in Anniston, April 4-8, 2022. No registration fee; expenses for meals and use of a city-provided vehicle will be incurred. Total estimated expenses for Williams is $75.

The council also approved travel/training expenses for Firefighters Caleb Williams and Clay Upchurch to attend the Alabama Fire College Rescue Technician: Rope II course in Anniston, April 11-13, 2022. Registration fee of $240 per employee. Expenses for meals and use of a city-provided vehicle will be incurred. Total estimated expenses for Williams and Upchurch are $285 each.

They approved travel/training expenses for Fire Inspector Chad Toland to attend the Alabama Fire College Plans Examiner I course in Anniston, April 18-22, 2022. Registration fee of $265. Expenses for meals and use of a city-provided vehicle will be incurred. Total estimated expenses for Toland are $340.

Also approved were travel/training expenses for HR Specialist Jayne McGee to attend the 2022 BSHRM Annual Legal Update in Birmingham, April 20, 2022. Registration fee of $100. Additional expenses for mileage will be incurred. Total estimated expenses for McGee are $153.23.

The council accepted additional accounts payable received for FY21 in the amount of $680.83.

They accepted the balance of accounts payable for February in the amount of $209,665.97.

They also approved the February payroll in the amount of $417,872.27.

A special work session with the Civil Service board took place at 4:30 p.m. with the regular work session following at 5:00 p.m.
