[WATCH] Sylacauga City Council holds first 2023 meeting

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga City Council met Thursday night, Jan. 5, at 6:00 p.m. with a work session prior to the meeting at 5:00 p.m.

At the meeting, the council authorized all signatures for financial transactions effective Jan. 1, 2023.

Two Street Department vehicles were declared surplus to requirements in a 2004 Ford F250 Pickup, S/N 1FTNF21P14EC31493 and a 1995 Ford F250 Pickup, S/N 1FTHF26H9SNA88577. Both were authorized for disposal on GovDeals.com.

A host of travel and training expenses for city employees were approved, including:

– PD Lt. Renea Cummings and Lt. Willis Whatley to attend the following CLEEP training: ‘Leading with Empathy’ on Jan. 12 and ‘Leading a Well-Balanced Life’ on Jan. 13 in Dothan. Registration fee of $99 per course per employee. Additional expenses for lodging, fuel, and meals will be incurred. Employees will carpool in a city-provided vehicle. Total estimated expenses for Cummings are $248 and for Whatley are $318.

– PD Chief Kelley Johnson, Capt. Rondell Muse, Lt. Renea Cummings, Lt. Willis Whatley, and Lt. Ryan Gaither to attend the AACOP Winter Conference in Montgomery, Feb. 13-16, 2023. Registration fee of $200 per employee. Employees will carpool in city-provided vehicles. Total estimates expenses for Johnson, Muse, Cummings, Whatley, and Gaither are $200 each.

– Fire Chief Nate Osgood and Fire Inspector Chad Toland to attend the Alabama Fire College Information Officer course hosted by the Anniston Regional Training Center, Feb. 22-24, 2023. Registration fee of $180 each; additional expenses for meals and use of a city-provided vehicle will be incurred. Employees will carpool. Total estimated expenses for Osgood and Toland are $255 each.

– Fire Chief Nate Osgood and Capt. Sam Ogilvie to attend the 2023 Alabama Fire Service Professional Development Conference in Hoover, Feb. 5-9, 2023. Registration fee of $200 each. Additional expenses for lodging, meals, and fuel will be incurred. Employees will carpool in a city-provided vehicle. Total estimated expenses for Osgood are $893.28; total estimated expenses for Ogilvie are $320.

– Fire Inspector Chad Toland to attend the Fire Marshal’s Association of Alabama Spring Conference at Lake Guntersville State Park, Feb. 28 – March 3, 2023. Registration fee of $75. Additional expenses for meals, lodging, and fuel for a city-provided vehicle will be incurred. Total estimated expenses for Toland are $612.52.

– Firefighters Clay Upchurch and Cass Patterson to attend the Alabama Fire College Rescue Technician: Wilderness Rescue I and II hosted by the Anniston Regional Training Center, Feb. 27 – March 3, 2023. Registration fee of $350 each. Additional expenses for meals and use of a city-provided vehicle will be incurred. Employees will carpool. Total estimated expenses for Upchurch and Patterson are $425 each.

– Fire Inspector Chad Toland, Lt. Josh Forbus, and Firefighter A.J. Tubbs to attend the Alabama Fire College Rescue Technician: Wilderness Rescue I and II courses hosted by the Prattville Regional Training Center, March 6-10, 2023. Registration fee of $350 each. Additional expenses for meals and use of a city-provided vehicle will be incurred. Employees will carpool. Total estimated expenses for Toland, Forbus, and Tubbs are $425 each.

The Zoning Board of Adjustments and Appeals was filled with the re-appointment of Stephen McClurg to a three-year term that expires in January of 2026 as well as the appointments of Gary Wesson and Ron Smith. Both Wesson and Smith filled vacant seats, and their terms will expire in January of 2024.

The city council accepted additional Accounts Payable invoices received for FY22 in the amount of $2,457.56 along with Accounts Payable invoices received for December in the amount of $80,006.84.

The next meeting of the Sylacauga City Council is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 19, at 6:00 p.m.
