SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga City Council approved a series of Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations and contracts Tuesday night, Feb. 17 during a special called meeting that was rescheduled due to a lack of quorum.
The council met following a work session that began at 5:00 p.m. The meeting had originally been planned for Thursday, Feb. 19, but was moved because a quorum of the council could not be formed.
Among the FY26 appropriations approved was an amount not to exceed $30,500 for the Coosa Valley Rescue Squad and $37,500 for The Arc of South Talladega County. The council also approved a $35,500 appropriation contract for the Talladega County Juvenile Justice Fund.
The council ratified the FY26 appropriation of $89,525 for Section 5311 non-urbanized area public transportation and the area-wide community transportation system. The City of Sylacauga partnered with the East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission and the Sylacauga Alliance for Family Enhancement for program information facilitation and management.
A separate appropriation was ratified in the amount of $35,150 for the city’s Nutrition and Senior Aid programs for aging consumers under Title III of the Older American Act. That program also includes partnerships with the East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission and Sylacauga Parks and Recreation for facilitation and management.
The council approved an $18,000 appropriation for the Talladega County Health Department and a $3,000 appropriation contract for the TCR Childcare Corporation.
Council members also approved an $82,940 appropriation contract with the Talladega County Drug and Violent Crime Task Force and a $52,000 appropriation contract with the Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce.
In other business, the council authorized Michael Rice with EEF&S to file a Rebuild Alabama Act grant application on behalf of the city. The council also approved Interim City Clerk/Treasurer Kassey Epperson to file a credit card application with a local bank on behalf of the City of Sylacauga.
The council authorized the police jurisdiction annual report due by March 1, 2026.
Council members also amended the wording of action taken on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026, regarding a six-month hold on issuing business licenses to new entities that receive 50 percent of their revenue from sales of vapor, tobacco, and/or alcohol products. The council added language stating the hold “shall not apply to restaurants or food service establishments where the sale of alcohol products is secondary to the sale of prepared food.”
The council approved FY25 accounts payable invoices totaling $47,867.88 and FY26 accounts payable invoices totaling $977,849.12.
The next scheduled meeting of the Sylacauga City Council is set for Tuesday, March 3, at 6:00 p.m.
