SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga City Council held its first meeting of 2026 on Tuesday night, Jan. 6, following a work session that began at 5:00 p.m., and approved a range of planning, financial, and operational items.
During the meeting, the council adopted the city’s fiscal year 2026 Transportation Plan, outlining roadway and infrastructure priorities for the coming year.
Council members also approved the annual Rebuild Alabama Act–mandated report detailing fiscal year 2025 expenditures for roadway and bridge projects funded through the program.
The council ratified and amended the city’s Ricoh copier and printer lease, including related changes in expenditures, and authorized Mayor Dr. Matt Hubbard to sign the necessary contract documents.
Several budgeted expenditures were approved, including $900 from the Animal Shelter FY26 budget for rabies vaccination for Animal Control Officer Gerrins and $1,800 from the FY26 budget for storm cleanup chainsaw training for four Street Department employees.
In financial actions, the council approved accounts payable invoices totaling $3,199.27 for FY25 and $391,697.41 for FY26. December 2025 payrolls in the amount of $520,925.26 were also approved.
An additional item was added to the agenda following the work session. The council voted to accept a recommendation from the Commercial Development Authority to place a six-month hold on issuing business licenses to any new business that derives 50 percent or more of its sales from alcohol, vape, or tobacco products.
The next Sylacauga City Council meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 22, at 6:00 p.m.
