SYLACAUGA, Ala – Thirty-two teams remain in each classification of the state basketball playoffs, and tonight Sylacauga and Childersburg will fight for a spot to be one of the final 16 teams and advance to the regional tournament in their classifications.
Sylacauga (22-7) topped Central Clay County last Thursday night 70-65 to win its area championship in Class 5A. Now the Aggies, who have on 20-plus games in each of the last four seasons, turn the focus to Woodlawn in the round of 32 tonight.
Woodlawn, the runners-up in Class 5A Area 08, fell to Ramsay 81-68 Friday in its area tournament championship. The Colonels will come to Sylacauga with a 16-15 record, but after Thursday night’s win over Clay Central, Sylacauga Head Coach William Copeland said do not be fooled by the Colonels’ record.
“[Woodlawn] has played a very tough schedule. They won some of those games and lost some,” Copeland explained. “They are a really good basketball team.”
Sylacauga and Woodlawn will tip-off at 7:00 at Douglass-Martin Court in Sylacauga. The Childersburg Tigers (20-9) will host the Handley Tigers (19-11) in the round of 32. Childersburg knocked off Oak Grove (66-55) and Montevallo (61-53) in its area tournament make it this far. Handley, the runners-up in its area, fell to Booker T. Washington High School (Tuskeegee) 46-36 in its area title game.
Childersburg and Handley will tip-off at 7:00 at Childersburg High School.
