SYLACAUGA, Ala. – COVID-19 has created a unique problem for the state of Alabama in regards to filling out the 2020 census. With people being confined to their homes, it has shaken up the normal flow of everything.
According to Sylacauga Mayor Jim Heigl, Sylacauga is currently sitting at around 54 percent in terms of the amount of people who have filled out their census forms.
That number is the best in Talladega County, and is slightly lower than the state average right now, which is 55 percent.
The U.S. Census Bureau has just announced that the 2020 Census field offices in Alabama will reopen effective Wednesday, May 6, while continuing to follow all current health and safety guidelines. This means that the Bureau will resume with dropping off 2020 Census invitation packages at the front door of households in most areas. No face-to-face interaction is necessary.
“I encourage everybody to get their census counts in as soon as possible because it is a big bearing on the finances for our city,” said Mayor Heigl. “It affects the funding for our streets, bridges, hospitals and first responders.”
People can fill out their census a variety of ways such as online, through email, on the telephone or regular mail.
