SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga varsity boys basketball team is off to a fast start this season.
Led by Head Coach William Copeland, the Aggies look like a Final Four team once again. The Aggies made the Final Four last season at the BJCC before losing to the eventual state champions from Mae Jemison in Hunstville.
So far during the brief season, the Aggies are 4-1 with dominating performance over the cougars from Coosa Central and the Lincoln Golden Bears in their first two games. After starting 2-0, SHS went on the road to Tuscaloosa to play in the Capstone Classic hosted by American Christian Academy (Tuscaloosa) at Shelton State Community College. The Capstone Classic only featured teams which made the playoffs during the 2016-2017 season. Teams from all classifications competed in the tournament.
During the 3-day tournament, SHS went 2-1 with a win over Ramsay High School and a win in an overtime thriller over ACA which landed the Aggies in the championship game. Against Ramsay, Sylacauga’s Malik Crawford scored 29 points. Crawford was unstoppable in Tuscaloosa on both offense and defense.
The 5A Aggies faced off against the 7A Huffman Vikings in the title game. Huffman lost in the 7A Final Four last season to the eventual state champs from Mountain Brook High Sschool. In a valiant effort, SHS fell to Huffman in a close loss and finished runners-up in the tournament. On Tuesday night, Sylacauga continues its 2017 campaign at home against Anniston, and goes on the road to Childersburg Friday night.
Both games are set to tip off at 7:00 and will be broadcasted on Yea!106.5 and WYEA 1290. You can listen to the games on your radio or on your phone by downgrading the WYEA app from your devices app store.
