SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga High School and Nichols-Lawson Middle School concert bands will help spread holiday cheer next week.
On Tuesday, Dec. 7, six different symphonic and percussion bands will perform at the 2021 Winter Band Concert in the Sylacauga High School auditorium.
High school band director Samuel Childs has been working with the students throughout the semester, but the particular focus has been on the holiday-themed music over the past month.
“We’ve had eight rehearsals,” said Childs. “It’s always a challenge, but the kids are used to it.”
As attendees enter, the high school jazz band will welcome the audience as they find their seats, and then the other five bands will entertain during the program. Those include the sixth grade beginner band, the seventh and eighth grade intermediate band, the high school and middle school percussion ensembles, and the show will finish with the high school band.
The big number that the senior band has been preparing is a Nightmare Before Christmas medley, and during the final number Childs will utilize the auditorium’s extravagant lighting system to display a lights show on stage. He hopes it will emulate the Christmas lights you see in neighborhoods.
This is the first winter concert for Sylacauga City School bands due to the cancellation of last year’s event as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We’re excited to finally have a winter concert,” Childs said. “We want to pack the place and fill the auditorium.”
The doors to the venue will open at 6:45 p.m. with opening remarks and the first number scheduled to begin at 7:00. The event is free to attend and any donations will be accepted.
