SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Mason Laurin, a senior angler for Sylacauga High School, is set to reel in a new chapter in his fishing career as he signed a scholarship with Troy University on Friday, April 5.
The signing ceremony at 2 p.m. in the SHS Media Center marked a milestone for Laurin, who will join Troy’s bass fishing team.
Laurin’s journey to this moment has been fueled by passion, dedication, and his love of nature and fishing which he described as God’s creation.
“I’ve been fishing pretty much since I could walk,” Laurin said. “I’ve always tried to keep close with Christ and that’s what keeps me going and motivated to stay on the water.”
Choosing Troy wasn’t just about proximity; it was about finding the right fit. “I came down to Troy and took a visit, and it’s just a beautiful campus,” Laurin said. “Me and [Coach Evan Rice] have stayed in contact ever since. Now I can call him a close friend, not just a coach.”
Laurin’s signing represents more than a personal achievement; it’s a legacy he’s both preserving and continuing. A legacy started by former Aggie and recent Bassmaster champion Will Davis.
“We have always been really close friends and I’ve always looked up to him,” Laurin said of Davis. “He is a friend, and I’m greatly proud of him. I hope that one day I can do the exact same thing that he did and make it to that professional level.”
As Laurin prepares to cast his line into collegiate waters, he remains grounded, offering advice to aspiring anglers at Sylacauga: “Always keep your head focused on what you want to do and work hard early so you don’t have to work as hard later in life.”
Laurin extended his gratitude to his family, sponsors including Davis Bait Company, and school administration for their support throughout his fishing journey.
