Sweeple: Sylacauga’s newest business will offer top pay for students working their way through college

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce welcomed Sweeple – a customizable full-service cleaning service – to the community Wednesday morning with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Sweeple, however, is not your normal cleaning company. When starting the company founders Adam and Nancy Bassett decided to do things differently by only hiring college students who are working hard to put themselves through school.

Sweeple started in Birmingham with a strong workforce base of UAB students and has quickly moved into East-Central Alabama with a plan to hire local community college students and commuters to other campuses. Soon, Sweeple will be on the scene in Auburn with Auburn University students as it is partnering with the school. Sweeple also partners with Troy University and the University of South Alabama.

Adam Bassett said although the millennial generation has a bad reputation, he believes the majority of today’s young people have a great work ethic. “Some people have a bad idea of millenials. That may be true in some cases, but most of these students are really hard workers and do great work,” he said.

The incentive is also there for the students. Bassett explained to chamber members his company offers students anywhere from $17/hour to $22/hour with flexible schedules that are curtailed around college courses. “These students are in school and doing everything they can to get better. That’s who we are looking for,” Bassett said.

Sweeple employees are certain to be the best of best according to the owners. Employees go through background checks, must be non-smokers and achieve a minimum 2.8 grade point average to be employed by Sweeple. “All these things are set up to where if one of these students come in to clean your home, office or Air BNB, you trust them to come in your home.”

Clients will already know their student cleaner, coined a ‘Sweeple’, before they enter the home. Sweeple introduces clients to their Sweeple through a biography sheet. Customers will know their Sweeple’s school, major, Greek affiliation and more before they ever come inside.

Also as a benefit to its employees, Sweeple will employ a student at its abnormally high-hourly rate until they are placed in their desired profession.
