South Talladega County football preview – Winterboro Bulldogs

SHARE NOW

ALPINE, Ala. – Coach Skylar Mansfield is in his third year as the Bulldog head man.  His bulldogs have reached the second round of the playoffs the last two years and he hopes that experience will pay dividends for his team in 2022.  The summer has motivated the team to become stronger, be more physical, and to be in much better condition for a long and tough season.

“We have a lot of young kids who are working very hard and learning at a rapid rate,” said Mansfield.

Payton Hutton and Dequarious Truss will play key roles on both sides of the ball and in the success for Winterboro’s football season.  Also, Deonta Smoot will carry a heavy load from the running back position as the Bulldogs will be a run-heavy team in 2022.  An inexperienced quarterback room will contribute to a lot of running early in the schedule.

Speaking of the schedule, a familiar face will host the Bulldogs right out of the gate.  Winterboro’s winningest coach in program history, Alan Beckett, now at Cedar Bluff, will invite the Dogs to Cedar Bluff on Aug. 19.  Other huge contests include gridiron rumbles with Spring Garden, who made the third round of the playoffs last year, and Wadley, who appeared in last years state championship game.  Also, a new rival in week 10 as Winterboro will travel to Childersburg.

The Bulldogs will have 35-40 kids to dress this season.  Coach Mansfield will be taking over the offense this season and calling plays. “We want to give our kids every opportunity to be successful,” explained Mansfield. Winterboro plays in class 1A Region 6
