SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Coach Rob Carter is excited going into his second season as the Aggie head coach
Coach Carter is not only excited but looking forward to getting started in 2022. “I have been very pleased with the progress that we have made during the summer and the enthusiasm that the players have shown to motivate themselves to being better this year,” says Carter.
The Aggies’ head man is also very pleased to have a true veteran staff in which he can depend on. It is a luxury to have two former head coaches on your sideline like defensive coordinator Anthony Jacks and offensive line coach Jeff Steers. It also helps to have Barry Strickland and Derrick Crawford who are Aggie graduates and have been coaching at SHS for decades. Josh Cantrell will also give a huge lift in making a very good and savvy staff.
One of the hardest things that Carter has had to deal with was losing Childersburg, Talladega, and Lincoln off of the 2022 schedule. The head coach said that it is not typical to replace 5 games in one year. Of course region play will be tough with Elmore County, Valley, Beauregard, Tallassee, and normal power Clay Central. But now how about this non-region slate, Benjamin Russell, Moody and Leeds who both will be very good, Trinity Presbyterian, and powerhouse Piedmont.
Coach Carter has a big junior class and is very upbeat with the way his young kids are stepping up and developing. The summer has been very good and a lot of improvement and strength have been shown. Leadership will come in several forms. Bryant Waters will lead the defensive effort and Tavares Lauderdale along with Zi McElrath will provide strength and leadership for their coaching staff. Connor Twyman, Rance Machen, and Antoine Borden will platoon at running back where a void was left by senior standout Malik Pope last year. They will also have to replace two year starting quarterback Brayson Edwards.
Coach Carter said, “I want to compete every Friday night. We are committed and we are stronger, but we MUST stay healthy!”
The Aggies play in class 5A region 4 and open the 2022 season with a jamboree against crosstown rival BB Comer on Friday Aug. 12. Follow SHS on SylacaugaAggies.com. Play-by-play voice Jeremy Law, color analyst Brent Atchley, and sideline reporter Matt Crocker will begin with pregame activities each week at 5:30.
