SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Big Lots in Sylacauga is closed until further notice after the roof of the building caved in earlier Thursday.
According to Sylacauga Fire Lieutenant Thomas Chamberlain, the roof collapse happened around 9:30 a.m. with only employees in the store.
“Fortunately nobody was hurt. There is a large hole in the ceiling that will require structural repair before they can reopen,” said Chamberlain.
According to Chamberlain, the roof most likely caved in due to the weight of the rain which has been very abundant over the past few weeks.
There is no timetable on the repairs yet, as the damage first has to be assessed.
SylacaugaNews.com visited the store and found posted signage in the window indicating the City of Sylacauga Code Department has inspected the building and “declared it unsafe for occupancy.”
