SHARE NOW

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – A group of five students competed as the Sylacauga High School Varsity Scholars Bowl team in the Alabama Scholastic Competition Association (ASCA) Scholars Bowl State Tournament on April 13 at Jefferson State Community College.

Team members are Will Hughes, Nicole Wilson, Gianna Silla, Zack Elliff, and Robert Wingfield. After winning the District tournament, the team advanced to the Division I state competition, winning the 5A Championship by defeating West Point High School from Cullman. Though the team fell short of winning the overall tournament, SHS member Will Hughes earned the third highest individual total points for the day. The team is coached by teacher Rhonda Brewer, who is also secretary of the ASCA.

Scholars Bowl competitions consist of two rounds. Round One begins with ten toss-up questions with each question followed by a three part bounceback bonus question. Round Two is another series of toss-up and bonus questions. Points are given for correct answers, and incorrect answers result in the opposing team having an opportunity to answer and score more points.

All questions are complex with a limited time for answers. Topics range from the Medieval Crusades, Opera, Foreign Governmental Policy, and French Literature to Modern Middle Eastern Events, Politics, World Geography, Chemistry, Mathematics, Pop Culture, and everything in between.

Congratulations to the SHS Varsity Scholars Bowl team for their achievements in this prestigious competition.
