SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Southern Dance and Performing Arts Scholarship has announced its first recipient for the Ramey K. Sumners Memorial Scholarship.
Ramey is the son of Dane and Jeanna Sumners, Jeanna being a dance professional in the Sylacauga community for the past 45 years. The dance scholarship was set up in memory of Ramey after his recent death in March.
In the selection process, qualities of community involvement and a desire to further the process of dance education and training beyond high school graduation, as well as leadership skills were considered.
The winner of the inaugural scholarship has been named, and it is Sylacauga High School’s Ibby Dickson.
Dickson is the daughter of Tripp and and Nancy Dickson. She is entering her junior year at SHS and will graduate in 2019. She began her dance training at the age of three and is a member of Spirit and Company, a studio based non-profit dance organization.
The scholarship program is anticipating the presenting of scholarships to deserving dancers will be a catalyst for their futures for years to come.
