SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Sylacauga High School principal Chad Murphy has announced the school’s learning plan for the rest of the school year.
In a letter, Murphy explained the process for the fourth term of the year and how grades will be calculated.
Work for students will be available online or through pickup at SHS. Teacher’s should be contacting students to inform them if they need take home packets.
In the letter Murphy said, “Our learning plan is designed to allow students to work alone, alongside you, or in conjunction with their teacher in a virtual setting where they will be available to answer questions. All teachers will have posted in their Google Classroom what their virtual office hours will be.”
“Students in Grades 9-12, operating on a traditional block schedule, the third nine weeks’ grades will be averaged with the virtual 4th nine weeks grades to determine final course grades for each course enrolled. Courses specifically required for graduation have been deemed critical courses for students to concentrate on; these include English, Math, Science, History, Life PE, Health, Career Preparedness, plus Arts Education, CTE & World Languages. Those students in other elective courses will receive assignments and grades, but the critical courses are priority for the remainder of the school year.”

Dear Sylacauga High School Family,
We are working diligently to create an opportunity for your child to learn during these final weeks of the school year. While no plan is perfect, we feel strongly that the plan at Sylacauga High School will provide the continuity and support families need during these unprecedented times while ensuring our students remain on track to graduate with their class. Teachers are prepared to support your students’ learning.
These learning opportunities will be available to you either online or for pick up at Sylacauga High School. Your student’s advisory teacher should be contacting you to find out if you need packets of work. All students need to be prepared for their courses for next year, please ensure that your student is considering these lessons as regular school work that is important for your child’s success.

Though we are operating within a limited delivery arena we will make all attempts to enforce local procedures for honor graduates and class rank. Advanced Placement exams will be administered through the College Board home assessment protocols which teachers will communicate to you. Students enrolled in Dual Enrollment courses will need to continue to adhere to their colleges requirements for course work.
Finally, all efforts are being made to plan and provide a graduation experience and if possible a junior/senior prom experience. As more information on this pandemic becomes available and guidelines for social distancing are relaxed we will begin to develop and share plans with you and your student.
Best wishes during this time of uncertainty I hope that you will take the necessary precautions to stay safe and healthy,
Chad Murphy, Principal
