SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Sylacauga High School has released the names of its top students for the 2016-17 senior class.
The school announced Madison Elizabeth Harper as its valedictorian. She is the daughter of Cindy Benefield and Jeff Harper. She will graduate with a 4.46 GPA. Along with her academic achievements, Harper tennis for four years and served as the president pf Mu Alpha Theta and was treasurer of the National Honor Society.
Harper will attend Auburn University in the fall and plans to major in pre-pharmacy. She has been awarded many scholarships including the Spirit of Auburn Founders Scholarship, Alabama Municipal Electric Scholarship, and the Coosa Pine Scholarship.
Jon Dalton Anderson was named salutatorian for the senior class. Anderson is the son of Cathy Phillips and Jon Anderson. He is graduating with a 4.36 GPA. Anderson has received the prestigious Sterne Scholarship to attend New York University in Manhattan. He plans to study business management and entrepreneurship, and later plans to pursue an MBA degree from Columbia University.
While at SHS, Anderson was active in the journalism department and was prof reader for the yearbook. He was an anchor on Aggie TV, president of the Spanish Club, and an active FBLA member.
With his nose in the books and hands involved in school organizations, Anderson still found a way to earn over 900 hours of community service in high school. A majority of his volunteer hours were spent with Cheaha Mental Center.
Sylacauga High School seniors will officially graduate Thursday, May 18 at 7:00 p.m.
