UPDATE: Due to the impending inclement weather, the Sylacauga City Schools and the Talladega County Schools systems have decided to delay the start time for students and staff Thursday morning until 10:00 a.m.
SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Severe weather is expected to impact a good portion of Alabama, including Sylacauga, starting Wednesday evening and heading into the early morning hours of Thursday.
According to the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, severe thunderstorms accompanying winds that could reach 80 miles per hour (mph) are the “primary threat” for the weather alert.
Tornadoes are also a possibility with this storm, and between one to three inches of heavy rainfall is expected.
This storm system comes just eight days after Sylacauga and other parts of the state experienced a storm that produced 4 and a half inches of rainfall and flooding en masse.
Leading up to Wednesday night, the NWS says to expect sustained winds of 15 to 25 miles per hour that could hit up to 50 mph.
The time frame where Sylacauga is under the greatest chance for high impact weather is from 10:00 p.m. until 4:00 a.m.
In preparation for the possibility of severe weather, potential displacement, or need of transportation, First Baptist Church (FBC) in Sylacauga will provide shelter and/or transportation for those in need.
Contact Chaplain Mark Ledbetter at (256) 626-9627 or go to FBC before the weather deteriorates if you believe you might require any of the aforementioned.
