SCS delays start of school until Aug. 27; students on campus 2 days per week

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga City Schools board of Education has delayed the start of the district’s school year.

The board of education unanimously approved two proposals from superintendent Dr. Jon Segars regarding the 2020-21 school year.

The first delaying the start of the school year by one week until Aug. 27, and changing the amount of school days from 176-171.

Segars told the board 11 faculty members were either diagnosed with COVID-19, or someone in their immediate families tested positive. Segars said delaying the school year would allow those faculty members to be ready by the beginning of the new start date.

The second recommendation from Segars would limit the amount of days students are on campus. While the school system still plans to offer in-person, virtual, and blended learning, students will only be in the classroom two days per week.

Students with last names beginning in A-L will meet in person on Monday and Tuesday. M-Z will meet in the classroom on Thursday and Friday. Segars said the district will sanitize schools on Wednesdays and the weekends.

A feeding plan for out of class students is not yet in place, or approved by the state, but could be in the coming days.

Athletics, according to Segars, will move on as scheduled.
