CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – The Childersburg City Council handled a number of routine matters during its Tuesday, Feb. 18, meeting. They opened the meeting with a pair of reappointments to the Childersburg Water-Sewer-Gas Board. Billy Atkinson, Jr. will serve through Sept. 30, 2030. Ron Webster’s term extends to Jan. 26, 2031.
With Mayor Ken Wesson serving as the Voting Delegate during the 2025 Alabama League of Municipalities convention in Huntsville, the Council selected Tommy Ivey as First Alternate, and Angie Twymon will serve as Second Alternate.
The Council approved a pair of grounds maintenance expenses. The Street Department will have four new Echo weed eaters from Russell Building Supply at $359.99 through the state bid list, with a fifth going to the Parks and Recreation Department. That total is $1,799.95, paid from Fund 23.
Approval also was granted for a Parks and Recreation request for a Kubota Zero Turn Mower from Lincoln Tractor, priced at $11,798.72 on the state bid list, also paid from Fund 23.
The Council approved the expense for the emergency replacement of a wooden trellis at the Rainwater Museum. It will be replaced by Yarnell Construction at a cost not to exceed $5,800.
Approval was given to pay invoices in the amount of $623,628.13 with $353,000 representing the latest payment on the construction work at the new Judicial Complex on US Hwy 280.
During discussions both prior to and after the regular meeting, Mayor Wesson said that he was informed that Childersburg will be included in Gov. Kay Ivey’s announcement of special grant funds for developing industrial park sites.
“I was told that our Industrial Park will receive $1.65 million,” said Mayor Wesson. “I have not received the official announcement and don’t know all the details, but I look forward to that.”
Wesson also told the Council that an additional six camera views have been added to plans for the new Childersburg Judicial Complex, pending an updated cost estimate later this week. Contractors found areas for which there was not adequate security coverage.
Robbie Riddle of Childersburg Kiwanis told the Council that the organization is moving forward with plans to replace gates at Kiwanis Park because they represent a danger.
“We hope to recoup the funds we spend via a grant program, but we thought it was important to get it done,” Riddle noted.
That discussion included the need to replace locks on the Kiwanis Park restrooms. The Childersburg Police Department will be tasked with locking and unlocking those doors at dusk and dawn.
The next regular meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 4, at 6:00 p.m.
