MOUNT OLIVE, Ala. – The Coosa County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that human remains discovered during a March search in the Mount Olive community have been positively identified as a missing Sylacauga man.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies spearheaded an extensive search of a wooded area on Friday, March 13. During the operation, investigators located what were believed to be human remains. The scene was immediately secured as investigators, crime scene personnel, and assisting agencies began processing the area.

At the time, authorities said the remains were believed to be those of Shannon Lee Morris, who had been reported missing from Sylacauga. The remains were transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for examination and identification.

On April 22, the sheriff’s office was notified that the remains were positively identified as Morris.

Sheriff Michael Howell said Morris was last seen in May 2025. Investigators determined his last known location was the Exxon station at the corner of U.S. Hwy 280 and County Rd. 49. Howell also said Morris had taken someone’s vehicle in Sylacauga, which was later located in Coosa County.

Officials said the investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding Morris’ death and whether any criminal activity was involved.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Coosa County Sheriff’s Office at (256) 377-4922, option 1.

Howell extended condolences to Morris’ family and thanked assisting agencies for their support.
