SYLACAUGA, Ala. – After years of waiting, Veterans Park in Sylacauga will soon have a new look.
In July, the Sylacauga City Council approved up to $150,000 to construct a new memorial at Veterans Park, along the 280 corridor.
Construction of the new memorial is expected to begin on Monday, Dec. 20 and take approximately four months to complete.
Nearly 300 tiles were removed from the previous memorial. Tiles that were not broken have been preserved and are available to families.
According to Sylacauga Parks and Recreation Director Jim Armstrong, some plaques were broken during the removal of the old memorial, therefore individuals are encouraged to contact the J. Craig Smith Community Center to ensure their plaque is available for pickup.
Anyone interested in newly memorializing their veteran may buy a plaque by creating an account at sylacauga.recdesk.com, then, under Programs, selecting General, Pinecrest Walking Trail Plaque.
