SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Law enforcement agencies across the southeast are set to begin a multi-state enforcement campaign, Operation Southern Slow Down, aimed at reducing speeding. The eighth annual campaign includes the states of Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Florida and, Tennessee and will run for the week of July 15-21, 2024.
Patrols will be increased, especially on interstates and other major highways, looking for drivers who are speeding and/or driving recklessly.
“Across the nation, speeding is the highest contributing factor for collisions,” said Lt. Cortney Wright of the Clemson University Police Department.
The campaign comes in the middle of the 100 Deadly Days of Summer, a time when law enforcement says that there has historically been a dramatic increase in the number of deadly crashes involving teens. Officers hope their efforts this week will remind drivers to slow down and save lives.
