Oak Grove Town Council tables key decisions and approves new additions in June meeting

OAK GROVE, Ala. – The Oak Grove Town Council opened their June meeting with a trio of unfinished business items. Ordinance 131, concerning parking restrictions, was read into the meeting record, discussed, and tabled to the July meeting.

Consideration of an increase in the fees related to planning and zoning was also tabled while more research is done on the matter.

The third unfinished business item – the abandonment of the unimproved Wallace St., north of US Hwy 280 – was withdrawn from the continuing agenda. The council will revisit the issue if one of the adjacent property owners petitions for it.

In new business, the council approved a request from Fire Chief Charlie O’Barr to add firefighter Steve Polen to the department.

The Hodges Meteorite Historical Marker has developed a crack, and after discussing options, the council moved to have it replaced by the original manufacturer at a cost of $1,755.

A pair of Resolutions, #611 & #612, were approved. The first updates the Oak Grove Check Acceptance Policy. The second approved the purchase of a 14-passenger bus through the 5311 Program for the public transportation program. The vehicle cost is $129,458 with a town match of $12,946.

The purchase of a Golf Cart/Side by Side was tabled until more pricing and other related information is compiled for consideration. The vehicle is proposed to be a joint purchase for the Town as well as the Volunteer Fire Department.

An item was approved making availability for the October Fall Festival mandatory for full time employees, who will be allowed to choose between pay or comp time.

With renewal of the Town’s Cable Franchise Renewal not necessary before January 2025, the council tabled the item for more research.

Before adjourning, the council heard a presentation from a local representative of a business that hopes to locate on Hwy 280 in Oak Grove.
