Oak Grove Council finishes “Old Business” items before turning to “New Business”

SHARE NOW

OAK GROVE, Ala. – The Oak Grove Town Council completed a trio of “Old Business” items during this week’s meeting. A draft agreement with Talladega County for use of their voting equipment during the upcoming municipal election was formalized.

The Council also approved two items relating to the Alabama League of Municipalities Business Meeting to be held in May. Mayor Tony White will serve as voting delegate, and David Harris will serve as an alternate, if needed. Approval was given to pay expenses, $3,207.30, for attending the associated ALM Convention in Huntsville.

In New Business, Stephen Boyd’s application to join the Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department was approved.

A request was approved to increase the ACH Payroll Limit from $5,000 to $6,000. Revisions to the Town’s rental agreements for the Park Pavilion and Senior Center will have to wait. The Council discussion revolved around the need to create a formal policy for such rentals first, and the item was tabled.

The Council approved a road repair agreement. The County will perform repairs to a culvert under Forrest Glen Rd. on behalf of the Town. The cost, per the agreement terms, will be $16,466.32.

A Volunteer Fire Department request was approved that will allow Williams Fire Apparatus to replace parts on two department vehicles.

The Council authorized Mayor White to execute an agreement with Posey C&M for seven sewer valve installations per an hourly rate. Posey took a copy of that agreement, and if no issues are found with the wording, the Mayor will execute the document and work will begin. This will allow the Town to terminate delinquent accounts.

A dispute with a property owner has moved past the two-year mark over ordinance violations that require the owner to clean up the property. A court order was served and a number of inoperable vehicles were removed, but other issues are still pending, also in violation of the applicable ordinances.

Prior to the meeting, a citizen addressed the Mayor and Council concerning a neighborhood issue. Leroy Nicholson reported concerns over excessive noise and odor problems in relation to what was described as a large animal rescue operation.

It was also announced that candidates for the upcoming municipal election will be able to submit qualification paperwork, starting June 10 through 5:00 p.m. on June 24.
